Jonas Kahnwald returns to school in the small town of Winden after months away, still raw from his father's recent suicide and treated with wary sympathy by classmates and teachers alike. Quiet and watchful, he's drawn back toward Martha, the girl he loves, and pulled almost immediately into the panic surrounding a local boy's disappearance.

Louis Hofmann plays grief as a kind of low static running under everything Jonas does — polite, guarded, never quite present. That stillness makes him the perfect anchor for a town full of buried secrets: he notices what others explain away, and his need to understand his father's death becomes the quiet engine pulling him toward Winden's stranger mysteries.
