James "Jim" Harper

Jim Harper arrives at Atlantis Cable News as Mackenzie McHale's hand-picked associate producer, a young journalist with old-fashioned convictions about what the news should be. He's earnest and a little awkward, quick to argue for rigor over ratings, and instantly drawn into the newsroom's tangled friendships and ambitions.

Sorkin gives Jim the show's conscience without making him a bore, and John Gallagher Jr. plays that decency with a stammering, self-deprecating charm rather than sanctimony. He's funniest when he's losing an argument he's morally certain of winning, which makes his idealism feel human instead of like a lecture.
