Helge Doppler 1986

In 1986 Winden, Helge Doppler is a middle-aged man tied to the family that runs the nuclear power plant, moving through the town with a guarded, unsettled air. He speaks little, seems worn down by something unspoken, and reacts to questions about the past with a flinching evasiveness that suggests he is carrying more than he lets on.

Peter Schneider plays Helge as a man hollowed out rather than villainous, his stillness doing more work than dialogue ever could. Dark builds its mysteries out of buried family history, and Helge's uneasy, half-present manner makes him feel like a man standing right beside a secret he cannot look at directly.
