Emily Gilmore

Emily Gilmore rules a Hartford mansion with white gloves and a steel spine. Kelly Bishop plays every put-down with such crisp comic timing that Emily never curdles into simple villainy; the hurt underneath the hauteur keeps showing through. The writing gives her a real appetite for control, but Bishop finds the loneliness inside it, so the Friday night dinners crackle with both cruelty and longing.
