Detective Tim Bayliss

Fresh off the transfer list, Tim Bayliss walks into the Baltimore homicide unit as the new guy, eager and unproven. He's handed his first case as primary detective almost immediately, a brutal one that will test whether he has the stomach and the nerve for this work. He watches, listens, and tries not to look as green as he feels.

The show uses Bayliss as our way in, and Kyle Secor plays him without vanity, letting the strain of the job show plainly on his face when veterans have learned to hide it. His partnership with the closed-off Pembleton gives the series its emotional spine, and Bayliss's openness — his willingness to be shaken by what he sees — makes him the character through whom the show's moral weight actually lands.
