Detective John Munch

John Munch works homicide in Baltimore, and he wears the job like a bad joke he's already heard. Sardonic, paranoid about institutions from the CIA to the Catholic Church, he talks his way through interrogations rather than muscling through them, using suspicion of everything as both a defense mechanism and an investigative tool.

Belzer plays him as pure verbal texture — that nasal, needling drawl turning every scene into a small performance of contempt for authority, including his own. The writing lets him be genuinely funny without softening the bleakness around him, and the effect is a cop who seems to be commenting on the show he's in, which is exactly why he outlasted it.
