D'Angelo Barksdale

D'Angelo is Avon Barksdale's nephew, a mid-level lieutenant demoted to running the low-rise towers after a case against him collapses. He's sharper and more reflective than the men around him, uneasy with the casual violence of the trade, and visibly searching for some way to make sense of the life he's been born into.

The writing uses him as the show's conscience without ever making him a saint — he still deals, still lies, still protects the family business. Gilliard plays that contradiction with a quiet, watchful sadness, never overacting the guilt. The chess-lesson scene, where he explains the game in terms of the corner hierarchy, distills his whole character: smart enough to see the board, trapped enough to still be a pawn on it.
