City Editor Augustus "Gus" Haynes

Gus Haynes runs the city desk at the Baltimore Sun, a gruff, exacting editor who still believes in the old craft of reporting — knocking on doors, checking facts, getting it right rather than fast. He's protective of his reporters, skeptical of shortcuts, and increasingly out of step with a newsroom chasing prizes and cutting staff.

Clark Johnson, himself a director on the show, plays Gus with the weary authority of someone who's seen every kind of story go wrong and still cares anyway. The writing uses him as the show's conscience about journalism itself — his frustration with buzzwords and budget cuts lands harder because he never once seems self-righteous about it.
