Carter Nix

Carter Nix enters American Crime already under suspicion, one of the men accused in a brutal home-invasion killing. He's a young Black man wrestling with addiction, guarded around police and lawyers alike, devoted in his own damaged way to his girlfriend Aubry, and instantly read by the system as guilty before anything is proven.

Elvis Nolasco plays Carter with a wary stillness that never begs for sympathy, which is exactly what makes the show's indictment of racial bias land. The writing refuses to sanitize him into an obvious victim, and Nolasco holds that tension — flawed, frightened, human — without ever softening it for comfort.
