Archie Bunker

Archie Bunker rules his Queens living room from his favorite chair, growling about the changing world outside it. He's a loading-dock foreman with fixed opinions on race, politics, and his own household, and a son-in-law he calls 'Meathead' who exists mainly to argue back. He wants things to stay exactly as they were.

The show hands O'Connor a bigot and dares you to laugh at him without letting you off the hook — every tirade is undercut by his own confusion and, underneath the bluster, real fear of a world moving past him. O'Connor plays the contradiction fully, finding the scared, even tender man inside the loudmouth, which is why Archie became impossible to simply dismiss.
