But Less crime, more hangout comedy — if you came for the scams, this leans elsewhere.

American Movie1999

TPB's fake documentary format is a joke built on real vérité films like this one, where hopeless men film themselves failing with total sincerity and you can't look away.

A real documentary about a real Wisconsin guy trying to finish his cheap horror film with a crew of equally broke, equally deluded friends. It's Ricky's energy, but nobody's acting.

But No jokes are written — the comedy comes from real desperation, and some of it stops being funny and just becomes sad.

Arrested Development2003

A family of grifters who keep failing upward, told with the same fondness for repeated catchphrases and doomed schemes that TPB runs on, just dressed up richer.

But Denser, more layered joke-writing that rewards close attention — a different kind of funny than TPB's shaggy chaos.

Reno 911!2003

Improvised mockumentary cops as dumb and doomed as the criminals they're chasing — the closest thing in tone to Lahey's side of the story.

But Sketchier and more episodic, with less of the season-long plotting TPB eventually builds.

British, low-budget, and unflinchingly honest about male failure and delusion, told through a similarly intimate handheld lens.

But Far more interior and squirmy — less about crime, more about the horror of your own thoughts.

The mockumentary that invented the mode TPB lives in — a fake film crew following deluded men who never notice how badly things are going.

But Music-industry satire rather than crime, and the deadpan is even drier — some find it too subtle where TPB is broad.

Winter's Bone2010

Strip out every punchline from a Ricky scheme and you get this — the same desperate economics of trailer-park crime, taken dead seriously.

Same rural poverty, same petty crime as survival, same loyalty among people society wrote off — but told completely straight, with not a single laugh.

But Bleak and slow-burning; if you need the jokes to get through the hardship, this offers none.
