The Heart, She Holler
- Comedy
- Strange
A grotesque Southern Gothic comedy in 15-minute bursts. The Heartshe family inhabits a fever dream of a town where logic dissolves and perversity is currency. It's lo-fi, absurdist, proudly ugly, and genuinely unsettling beneath the laughs. For people who find conventional comedy too polite.

Squidbillies2005
Adult Swim's cartoon masterpiece of rural degradation and family chaos. Equally committed to grotesquerie, Southern Gothic atmosphere, and jokes that land in unexpected places. Pure id in animated form.
But Deliberately crude in every dimension—animation, language, subject matter. If you need your comedy to signal good taste, this isn't it.

Too Many Cooks2014
An 11-minute nightmare disguised as a sitcom opening. Shares the same warped DNA: genre deconstruction, mounting dread under a smiling surface, and the sense that something is very wrong beneath the premise.
But It's hypnotic but deeply unsettling. Not comforting. Some viewers find the tonal shift from parody to horror exhausting rather than brilliant.

Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule2010
Tim Heidecker's talk show where nothing works and discomfort is the point. Same deadpan commitment to awkwardness, same willingness to let scenes sit in silence. Equally committed to making you squirm.
But Slower and more deliberate than most comedy. The humor lives in what's *not* said, which takes patience some viewers don't have.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Nurse Jackie2009
Both refuse to separate the grotesque from the tender. Both have families at the center that are funny and awful in equal measure, and both trust the audience to hold both feelings at once.
Edie Falco in a prestige dramedy about addiction and family disaster. Tonal whiplash between comedy and real pain. Every scene slides between darkly funny and genuinely harrowing without breaking the fourth wall.
But It's structurally a drama with jokes, not a comedy. If you want laughs, the emotional weight might feel like a betrayal. Also gets repetitive as addiction narratives do.

Baskets2016
Zach Galifianakis in a Lynchian comedy-drama about failure and family. Blends the grotesque with genuine pathos; finds tragedy and humor in the same scene without winking at the audience.
But It's melancholy under the oddness, which can feel depressing. Not the place to go if you want jokes that confirm you're smart.

The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret2010
David Cross's cringe masterpiece about incompetence and delusion. Dark, strange, committed to making you uncomfortable, but grounded in real character humiliation. Same willingness to let comedy get weird.
But The cringe is intense and relentless. If you watch comedy to feel good, this is the opposite medicine.

Wonder Showzen2005
MTV2's unhinged sketch show that treats children's television as a target for deconstruction and surrealism. Chaotic, genuinely strange, refuses conventional structure. Peer into the same warped space.
But It's aggressive and often offensive for offensiveness's sake. The randomness can feel exhausting if you're not already primed for it.

Xavier: Renegade Angel2007
Adult Swim's intentionally terrible CGI vehicle for absurdist philosophy and grotesque humor. Ugliness as aesthetic choice; same commitment to discomfort as a creative tool rather than a bug.
But The animation is deliberately bad, which some people find unwatchable. It's also conceptual in a way that leaves traditional joke structure behind entirely.

Inland Empire2006
Both abandon the comfortable surface of their format and dive into something closer to fever dream. Both trust ugliness and confusion as legitimate artistic choices, and both make you feel like you're losing your grip on reality.
David Lynch's final feature: a three-hour nightmare about performance, identity, and realities fracturing. Handheld video, non-linear, deliberately incoherent. Same commitment to dream-logic and the unsettling as primary emotion.
But It's abstract, long, and actively hostile to conventional narrative. Watching it is work. Many viewers find it pretentious or simply impenetrable.
