Sonic Underground
Sonic Underground is a 1999 animated series where Sonic, Sonia, and Manic—triplet hedgehogs separated at birth—reunite as a rock band while evading Dr. Robotnik's tyranny on the planet Mobius. It's colorful, energetic, and pitched squarely at kids who love the video game character but don't mind a messier, weirder interpretation. Part action-adventure, part musical, entirely committed to its own oddness.
If you liked this
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog1993
The earlier Sonic cartoon that nails the character's cocky energy and humor. If you want pure Sonic shenanigans without the family-band subplot, this is sharper and funnier—every episode moves at breakneck speed.
But It's from 1993, so the animation is flatter and less polished. Some jokes land harder than others, and there's less character development.

Sonic X2003
A more refined anime-style Sonic series that actually balances action, character moments, and heart. Sonic lives on Earth with human friends, which sounds odd but creates genuine emotional stakes alongside the adventure.
But It's slower-paced than Sonic Underground and requires patience with some melodrama. The English dub varies wildly in quality depending on the season.

Batman: The Animated Series1992
The gold standard for what superhero cartoons can be: genuinely funny, beautifully designed, and smart enough for adults while remaining fun for kids. It proves the formula works across the board.
But It's darker in tone than Sonic Underground—less music, more moral weight. If you want constant energy and zaniness, this plays things too straight.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish1999
Both are products of late-'90s Cartoon Network/Kids' WB excess: chaotic, colorful, willing to be weird, and dead certain that kids want songs, adventure, and characters who crack jokes.
Released the same year as Sonic Underground, this TV movie is what happens when '90s cartoon chaos gets a budget and genuine heart. A group of orphan heroes on a quest with celebrity guests, original songs, and real stakes—it's the movie version of that era's energy.
But It's aggressively random and the emotional beats clash jarringly with the comedy. If you want tonal consistency, you won't find it here.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem2023
A live-action/CGI hybrid where the Turtles have a fifth member and the tone is deliberately campy. It matches Sonic Underground's willingness to be weird and theatrical without apologizing.
But The CGI is visibly dated and the quality is uneven. It's earnestly goofy in ways that don't always work, and fans of the original often dismiss it.

Animaniacs1993
Rapid-fire comedy, genuine musical talent, and characters with real personality. It's smart and silly in equal measure, with callbacks and references that work for multiple age groups.
But The humor relies on knowledge of '90s pop culture and references that date badly. It's less action-focused and more comedy-focused than Sonic.

The Spectacular Spider-Man2008
A superhero cartoon that prioritizes character development and consequence alongside action. It's colorful, energetic, and genuinely well-written—what you might want Sonic Underground to grow into.
But It's more serious in tone and demands more investment in plot. If you want pure spectacle and zaniness, this asks for emotional engagement.

Mega Man: Fully Charged2018
A modern take on the Mega Man formula with updated animation, humor, and a similar video-game-adaptation energy. It knows its audience and leans into the absurdity without pretending it's Shakespeare.
But It's very much a kids' show and makes no apologies for it—some will find it too juvenile. The animation style is deliberately simplistic.

X-Men '972024
The template for how to adapt complex source material into Saturday morning television. It has action, humor, character arcs, and genuinely memorable episodes that hold up decades later.
But It's slower-paced and more serialized than Sonic Underground. The early animation is inconsistent, and it takes time to find its rhythm.

Cybersix1999
Both center on a protagonist discovering their true family identity while being hunted by an oppressive force. Sonic Underground plays it as colorful adventure; Cybersix plays it as gothic mystery. Same skeleton, completely different flesh.
An anime that aired the same year as Sonic Underground: gorgeously animated, genuinely dark, with a mysterious protagonist uncovering the truth about her origins. If you loved Sonic Underground's mystery-and-family plot but want it to be genuinely unsettling and sophisticated.
But It's serious where Sonic Underground is playful. The animation is beautiful but the story is bleak, and the tonal whiplash might feel jarring if you go in expecting adventure-comedy.
