Hollywood Arts

Trina Vega returns to Hollywood Arts as a teacher, guiding the next generation of performers through comedy, chaos, and the occasional musical number. It's a warm, funny series that mines genuine heart from the staff-room perspective while keeping the energy high. For anyone who loved the original show, or who enjoys workplace comedies with musical teeth.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you miss the bright, joke-dense rhythm of a school-of-talent comedy and want a light, musical-tinged visit back to a familiar world.

Skip it if you want a story with real stakes or a slow-burning plot, since this stays brisk, broad and cheerful from its first scene to its last.

What it asks of you: Twelve episodes of about twenty-seven minutes each, so it asks for an easy half-hour at a time, with no homework and no sprawling plot to track.

Glee2009

A musical comedy-drama about misfits finding their voice through song. It captures that same blend of sincere emotion and high-school chaos, with production numbers that genuinely excite.

But The tonal whiplash between comedy and tragedy can feel jarring, and later seasons lose their footing as the show struggles to maintain momentum.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist2020

A young woman discovers she can hear people's inner thoughts through song. It has Glee's musical DNA but with a gentler, more grounded approach to storytelling and genuine emotional depth.

But The premise is stranger than it sounds, and it demands you surrender to the concept fully or it won't land. The show was cancelled after two seasons.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series2019

Teachers and students at a real high school put on High School Musical as a stage production. It's meta without being smug, funny without punching down, and genuinely invested in its characters' growth and relationships.

But If you're resistant to self-aware Disney properties or earnestness disguised as irony, this will feel cloying. It also requires tolerance for very young casts.

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Comeback2005

Both centre on people navigating the entertainment industry from the inside. But where Hollywood Arts is warm and mentorship-focused, The Comeback is about ego, failure, and how desperately people cling to dreams that may not serve them.

Lisa Kudrow plays a delusional actress trying to revive her career. It's a documentary-style comedy that understands showbiz delusion with surgical precision. Cringe humour with real intelligence underneath.

But It's deeply uncomfortable to watch—the humour lands by making you squirm. Some may find it meanspirited rather than clever, and it feels dated in how it tackles celebrity.

GODSPEED2020

A comedy about teachers at a high school for the arts. Sharp ensemble cast, strong writing about pedagogy and mentorship, with real affection for the work of teaching people who dream big.

But It's British, which means the humour lands differently and the pacing is slower. It also went largely unnoticed, so you're building from nothing.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel2017

A woman discovers her gift for stand-up comedy in 1950s New York. Electrifying performances, gorgeous production design, and a real love for the machinery of how entertainment works.

But The protagonist can feel self-centred and exhausting, and the show's whirlwind energy becomes repetitive across five seasons. It's also not primarily a comedy.

Bunheads2012

Amy Sherman-Palladino's love letter to dance and teaching. A woman inherits a ballet studio and discovers her calling as a mentor. It's witty, fleet-footed, and genuinely moves you.

But It was cancelled after one season, so you're investing in something unresolved. The rapid-fire dialogue takes getting used to.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels2020

A dark-toned ensemble piece set in 1930s Los Angeles with a strong cast doing stellar character work. It proves that supernatural horror and genuine human drama can live together comfortably.

But It's grim and violent in ways that have nothing to do with music or comedy. If you're looking for something fun and light, this is the opposite direction.

Call the Midwife2012

An ensemble drama about women doing meaningful work together. Warmth, competence, humour, and real stakes. It understands that workplace shows work best when people genuinely care about each other.

But It's about childbirth and midwifery, not performing arts, so the subject matter is entirely different. If bodily realities bother you, this isn't it.

The School of Rock2003

Both explore how a teacher with an unconventional background reaches students by loving what they do. But School of Rock does it all in one afternoon and without a laugh track, letting warmth speak for itself.

Jack Black as a rock musician who poses as a substitute teacher and transforms a classical music school. Pure joy—funny, inspiring, and genuinely invested in teaching as transformation. The music is real and earned.

But It's a film, not a series, so it wraps everything in ninety minutes. Some find Jack Black's energy exhausting rather than charming, and the sentiment can feel saccharine.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike2012

Both grapple with what happens to performers when performance is no longer the centre of their lives, and how mentorship and legacy intersect with aging gracefully.

A Chekhov adaptation set among theatre people in Connecticut. Hilarious, erudite, and deeply weird—it's a comedy written by someone who understands both theatre and sadness at the same time.

But It's a play adapted to film, so it's talky, literary, and assumes you know some of its references. The humour is dry and sometimes bitter. It also doesn't have any musical numbers.
