- Disaster
- Very dark
- Relentless
A South Korean medical drama centred on the chaos and heroism that erupts when a massive disaster strikes Seoul. It's tense and propulsive, balancing intimate human stakes against the scale of a city in crisis. For anyone who finds meaning in watching professionals do impossible things under pressure.

Grey's Anatomy2005
The gold standard for hospital drama: complex characters, high stakes, genuine emotion. Seasons 1–3 especially nail the balance between personal and professional catastrophe.
But It runs 20 seasons and becomes repetitive. The early seasons are essential; later ones coast on formula.

ER1994
The template for everything that came after. Frenetic energy, overlapping storylines, real tension in the emergency room. It feels lived-in and urgent in a way few shows manage.
But Dated medical technology and some storylines have aged poorly. The pacing can feel chaotic if you're not in the mood.

The Good Doctor2017
Focused, emotional, with a protagonist whose difference matters to the story. Each case carries weight. Episodes often hit hard.
But Sometimes leans into sentiment over realism. The formula can feel predictable once you've seen a handful of episodes.

BPM (Beats per Minute)2017
Both use a crisis scenario to expose how institutions and individuals respond when lives are on the line. Less about the disaster itself than the human choice it forces.
A French film about a group of AIDS activists fighting institutional indifference during a health crisis. It's structured like a disaster film—urgent, collective, about people trying to save lives against systems that won't act. The emotional weight is immense.
But It's a feature film, not episodic. Heavy political content about death and loss. Not a comfort watch. Subtitled.

Crash Landing on You2019
A masterclass in Korean drama craft. Charm, humour, real stakes, and characters you genuinely care about. The emotional peaks land because the groundwork is solid.
But It's romantic comedy-adjacent, so if that tone isn't your thing, the lighter moments will frustrate you.

Signal2016
A Korean drama that builds dread methodically. Intricate plotting, excellent performances, the kind of show where details matter. Genuinely gripping.
But It's about serial murder and cold cases. Dark and sometimes brutal. The timeline can be confusing on first watch.

Itaewon Class2020
Korean drama at full intensity. A revenge narrative with real human cost. Beautifully shot, finely acted, and it doesn't pull punches about class and violence.
But Unrelenting and sometimes graphic. If you want comfort viewing, this isn't it. Also quite long at 16 episodes.

Code Black2015
Fast-paced medical procedural where nearly every episode involves a mass casualty event. High chaos, genuine medical detail, stakes that stick.
But Gruesome and relentless. Can feel like watching trauma unfold rather than drama. Cancelled after three seasons, so it doesn't fully resolve.

The Knick2014
A hospital drama where the setting is as much character as the people. Visually stunning, narratively ambitious, with performances that burn. Soderbergh's fingerprints are all over it.
But It's dark in ways that can feel gratuitous. Period medical racism is part of the story, handled unflinchingly. Only two seasons before cancellation.

New Amsterdam2018
Warm-hearted medical drama with an idealistic protagonist trying to fix a broken system. Character-focused, often funny, generally hopeful in a way that feels earned rather than naive.
But Sometimes prioritises sentiment over realism. If you want grit and moral complexity, this leans more toward inspiration. Also quite long-running.

The 8 Show2024
Both compress extreme human pressure into a short timeframe and watch how people choose. Less about what happens than who they become when they have to choose.
A Korean thriller-drama that traps eight people in a scenario and watches how they respond. Expertly paced, morally complex, absolutely gripping. It has the same intensity as a real-time disaster but in a confined space.
But Deeply nihilistic. Several characters are unlikeable by design. If you need to see goodness rewarded, this will frustrate you. Also quite dark.
