Corpse Party: Tortured Souls
A four-episode anime about students trapped in a haunted school built over a massacre site. Visceral body horror, Japanese urban legend atmosphere, and genuinely unsettling storytelling compress what could be a feature into something urgent and punishing. For people who want horror that doesn't pull punches or offer easy comfort.

Another2012
Mystery-horror about a cursed school where students die in increasingly horrible ways. Same era, same Japanese school setting, same commitment to making you genuinely anxious about who survives to the next episode.
But Relies heavily on jump scares and melodrama; some viewers find the tragedy overreaching and the mystery resolution underwhelming.

Mononoke2007
Stunning art direction, folklore-rooted supernatural mystery, and a protagonist who investigates paranormal phenomena with clinical distance. Same commitment to unsettling atmosphere and visual beauty doing the horror work.
But Abstract and painterly to the point of obscuring plot. If you want clarity and momentum, you'll fight the style.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun2020
Supernatural horror-comedy with a school setting, Japanese urban legend DNA, and genuine eerie moments wrapped in black humour. Less brutal than Corpse Party but with similar folklore grounding and visual flair.
But Tonal whiplash between comedy and horror; some arcs veer cutesy when you want dread. The levity won't work for everyone.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Both trap characters in closed supernatural systems where survival is accidental, escape is impossible, and the universe operates on logic that hates them specifically.
A magical girl anime that turns the genre inside out through body horror and cosmic tragedy. Shares Corpse Party's willingness to transform pretty things (schoolgirls, wishes, magic) into mechanisms of punishment and despair.
But Slow first three episodes before the genre shift hits; impatient viewers may bounce before it gets cruel. The middle section prioritizes emotional devastation over plot.

Elfen Lied2004
Extreme body horror, genuine shock value, and a protagonist haunted by what she's done. Uncompromising in its violence and willing to alienate viewers. Peak 2000s edginess that mostly earns it.
But Gratuitous nudity and gore without always serving the story. Some scenes feel designed to shock rather than illuminate; the fanservice undermines the pathos.

Shikabane Hime2008
Animated series about corpses rising and the people who stop them. Gothic atmosphere, genuine creepy-crawly body horror, and a mystery about resurrection that unfolds deliberately across episodes.
But Uneven production values and a plot that meanders; later episodes lose momentum and focus. The ending feels rushed after a slower build.

Ghost Hunt2006
Both are Japanese supernatural mysteries that use school settings and folklore as architecture for genuine dread. Both treat their ghosts as problems with histories rather than just threats.
A paranormal investigation series that builds mystery through folklore research and psychological horror rather than gore. Same Japanese supernatural sensibility, similar episodic structure, and the same commitment to making school settings feel haunted from within.
But Aired in heavily edited form on TV; the best version is the DVD cut. Mystery-focused rather than action-focused, so if you want combat or chase sequences, you won't find them.

Angel Beats!2010
Both trap students in school spaces where the rules are wrong, both unfold the mystery through character interaction, and both treat the supernatural not as spectacle but as evidence of deeper trauma.
A series where characters discover they're trapped in a supernatural school environment and must uncover the mystery before they can leave. Blends horror atmosphere with emotional weight and character-driven mystery. Anime that respects its premise and commits to the consequences.
But Shifts tonally from horror into drama and romance; if you want unrelenting bleakness, it will disappoint you with its moments of warmth. The earlier episodes are better than the ending.
