Before We Die
Other titles called Before We Die: the film.
A British crime drama where detective Hannah Laing is dragged into the world of human trafficking while protecting her son's friend. Tense, morally murky, with performances that catch every uncomfortable moment. For viewers who want crime stories with real consequences and no easy answers.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like crime drama where the moral ground keeps shifting under a single investigator, and you're happy to sit with grey characters rather than be rescued by a clean verdict.
Skip it if you want a brisk, tidy procedural with neat weekly closure; this one is unhurried and murky, and its tone can feel relentlessly bleak.
What it asks of you: Expect close attention and a watchful build, with 47-minute episodes that trade quick answers for a muddy, morally tangled texture.

Line of Duty2012
Intense procedural about police corruption and the investigators hunting it. Intricately plotted, propulsive, with the same taste for moral ambiguity and characters under unbearable pressure.
But Six seasons means significant commitment, and later ones divide opinion. The puzzle-box plotting can feel more important than character by the end.

Bodyguard2018
Netflix thriller about protection detail and impossible choices. One taut season, relentless pacing, Lesley Sharp doing what she does best—holding the moral centre of chaos.
But Ends on a cliffhanger that was never resolved. Infuriating if you want closure, satisfying if you prefer ambiguity.

Happy Valley2014
Sarah Lancashire as a detective on the edge, brilliant writing about crime, family, and what happens when duty and love collide. British crime drama at its sharpest.
But Violence and trauma are central, not decorative. Bleak in ways that demand something from you emotionally.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Complicit2013
Both examine how ordinary people become entangled in crime through inaction and impossible choices, where the real drama is internal—the slow erosion of your own principles.
Swiss thriller about complicity and moral collapse. A man witnesses a crime, does nothing, and the consequences spiral. Like Before We Die but compressed into two hours and filmed like a pressure cooker.
But Formally challenging and deliberately slow. No comfort, no resolution. The moral questions linger because there are no easy answers.

River2015
Stellan Skarsgård as a detective haunted by a case. Stylish, strange, genuinely moving. A six-hour meditation on grief wrapped in a crime story.
But Only six episodes total. Ends abruptly. Some found it too experimental for its own good.

The Fall2013
Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) versus a serial killer in Belfast. Methodical, intelligent, with characters who feel like real people doing difficult work.
But Three seasons with an ending that frustrated many viewers. Slower burn than you might expect from the premise.

Godless2017
Western town run by women, with Jeff Daniels as a charismatic villain and Michelle Dockery in the middle. Gorgeous cinematography, genuine stakes, unexpected emotional depth.
But Only seven episodes. Some found the gender politics heavy-handed. Ends before a full story arc concludes.

The Stranger2020
Harlan Coben mystery with a killer premise: a stranger tells you a secret that tears apart your life. Twisty, character-driven, genuinely gripping across its run.
But Netflix's adaptation instinct: it's slicker and safer than it should be. Solves too many problems too neatly.

Vera2011
Brenda Blethyn as a detective solving murders through relentless curiosity and intuition. Cosy British crime with real grit, episode after episode of satisfying mysteries.
But Extremely long-running and uneven. Quality wavers significantly between seasons. Can feel repetitive if you binge.

Marcella2016
Anna Friel as a detective with trauma and secrets, digging into an old case. Pulpy thriller energy with a willingness to be genuinely dark and weird.
But Three seasons of diminishing returns. First season is best; later ones lose focus. Some plot threads never properly resolve.

The Americans2013
Both ask: what do you sacrifice for someone you love? Both put family loyalty against duty and legality, both refusing to let anyone win cleanly.
KGB officers posing as an American couple in the 1980s. Six seasons of moral contradiction and family under siege. Phenomenal acting, writing that trusts its audience, endings that hurt.
But Slow-burn espionage, not action thriller. Some seasons dip. Commitment required. Cold War details matter.

In Treatment2008
Like Before We Die, about being drawn into other people's crimes and traumas without clear boundaries. Both explore the weight of knowing things you cannot unknow or unreport.
Gabriel Byrne as a therapist listening to patients' lives unravel. No plot, pure character and dialogue. Each episode is one session. Hypnotic, intimate, devastating.
But Literally people talking in rooms. If you need plot momentum, this will feel static. Some patients are more interesting than others.
