Bakuten!!

Bakuten!! is a sports anime about a high school men's rhythmic gymnastics team chasing nationals. It's visually gorgeous, genuinely funny, and surprisingly moving—a show that makes you care deeply about a sport you've never watched. Perfect for anyone who loves character-driven ensemble stories with real stakes and actual joy in them.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a sports underdog story built on oddball characters and comic earnestness, where the joke is that a sport nobody takes seriously gets the full heart treatment.

Skip it if your patience for a flamboyant, gag-heavy tone is thin, or you want technical instruction in the sport, since its focus stays on the team's emotional arcs.

What it asks of you: Twelve half-hour episodes of bright, earnest energy, asking little per sitting but a willingness to let its sincere, bouncy tone carry you.

Haikyuu!!2014

Another sports anime that nails the alchemy: stellar animation, a team that feels like family, real rivalry and growth, and the kind of nail-biting matches that make you shout at your screen.

But Volleyball can feel repetitive if you're not invested in the characters, and some arcs drag. It's also got 80+ episodes, so real time commitment.

Free Birds2013

Swimming anime with the same gorgeous fluidity and character depth. Balances intense competition with genuine tenderness between teammates. The rivalry-to-friendship arcs will wreck you in the best way.

But The fanservice can feel heavy-handed at times. If you're not patient with slice-of-life team bonding before the racing, it might feel slow.

Ping Pong The Animation2014

Two genius players, total opposites, locked in a rivalry that becomes something deeper. Visually inventive, character work is phenomenal, and it respects the sport without making it everything.

But The hand-drawn, deliberately unconventional style won't click for everyone. Only 11 episodes, so if you love the world you'll wish there was more.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Kanamemo2009

Both are about misfits building something together through repeated small moments of connection. The sport/newspaper is almost beside the point—it's really about becoming a team.

A girls' comedy about running a newspaper shop—zero sport here, but identical warmth and ensemble chemistry. Every character is weird and specific. It understands that found family is what makes us want to keep showing up.

But It's pure slice-of-life with almost no plot. If you need narrative momentum or aren't fond of gag humor, you'll feel adrift.

Carole & Tuesday2019

A sci-fi musical about two girls chasing their dream on Mars. Warm, funny, genuinely moving, and the soundtrack is excellent. Similar DNA: ensemble warmth meets real stakes.

But The plot meanders sometimes and genre-shifting can feel uneven. Some story threads don't resolve cleanly, which frustrates certain viewers.

Kuroko no Basuke2012

High school basketball with a supernatural gimmick and character dynamics that make you care about every single team member. Fast-paced, funny, and genuinely tense during games.

But Shonen tropes are heavy. The supernatural powers can feel silly if you're grounded in realism. Also very long—50+ episodes for the core arc.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018

Four girls go on a journey to Antarctica. Not a sports show, but it has that same magical thing: ragtag ensemble, genuine character growth, earned emotional payoff, and total commitment to making you care.

But The first episode is pretty saccharine and might turn you off if you hate high-energy schoolgirl energy. It finds its balance later.

SK∞2021

Skateboarding anime with gorgeous art direction, a compelling antagonistic romance, and real skill-building narrative. Pulpy fun that never apologizes for being sincere about its characters.

But Some found it melodramatic. If you need grounded realism or dislike over-the-top character designs, the stylization might grate.

Your Name.2016

Both use visual splendor and character chemistry to make the ordinary feel sacred—a shared moment in class, a text exchange, a rehearsal. Both are love letters to the people we choose to stay present with.

Gorgeous anime film about two teens mysteriously linked across time. Romance, mystery, comedy—and underneath it all, the feeling that connection with another person is the most important thing you can build.

But Phenomenally popular, so if you're fatigued by anime hype or prefer less mainstream work, this might feel overpraised. The romance plot can feel saccharine if you're cynical.
