America Unearthed
- Mystery
- Dip in and out
Scott Wolter travels America hunting archaeological mysteries and alternative historical claims: lost civilizations, misidentified artifacts, pre-Columbian visitors. It's accessible pseudoarchaeology that treats speculation as revelation, moving fast enough to be entertaining even when evidence is thin. For people who love mysteries more than rigour.
If you liked this
Ancient Aliens2009
If you enjoyed America Unearthed's willingness to ask "what if?", this explores the possibility that extraterrestrials shaped human history. Same blend of mystery, wonder, and selective evidence presented with complete confidence.
But The circular logic becomes exhausting: every ancient accomplishment is deemed too impressive for humans, so aliens must have done it. It's spiritually patronizing beneath the spectacle.

In Search of Monsters2019
Joel McHale investigates cryptids and strange phenomena with genuine curiosity and a willingness to look foolish. It has the same exploratory spirit as America Unearthed but with better humour and honest scepticism.
But Shorter episodes and a lighter tone mean less time for deep dives into any single mystery, which some might find frustrating.

The Curse of Oak Island2014
Brothers Rick and Marty Lagina hunt for treasure on a Canadian island, following historical clues and archaeological hunches. It has the same addictive mystery-box structure as America Unearthed, with real digging and real uncertainty.
But Episodes repeat speculation endlessly while actual progress moves glacially. It's designed to keep you watching without resolving anything.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol2011
Both take 'what if the official story is wrong?' seriously as an idea, but Prot interrogates the psychology of that belief rather than treating it as a scavenger hunt.
An Icelandic film about a man who claims to be an alien. It's visually strange, deadpan, and deeply philosophical about belief, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about origins. Brilliant and utterly unclassifiable.
But It's experimental, slow-paced, and won't answer any of its questions. The enigmatic approach will frustrate anyone wanting clarity or narrative resolution.

Mysteries at the Museum2010
Don Wildman examines strange artifacts in real museums and investigates their backstories. It's America Unearthed's format distilled into tighter packages with actual provenance and documented history.
But Less sensationalism and more straightforward storytelling means it won't grab you the same way if you're after dramatic revelations.

Expedition Unknown2015
Josh Gates travels the world chasing historical mysteries and legends with genuine warmth and openness to local knowledge. The tone is lighter and the host is likeable in ways that offset the speculative stretches.
But It's travelogue as much as investigation, so if you want deep archaeological focus rather than cultural immersion, it won't satisfy.
