It's brighter, bigger, and openly a launchpad for the games' wider universe, but it never loses its central joke—everything, including the jokes, moves fast.

A hyper-saturated, candy-colored live-action anime about speed as identity and family as team, told with the same "movement equals joy" philosophy Sonic's action scenes are built on.

But The visual style is genuinely overwhelming — long stretches feel like being inside a kaleidoscope, and the plot is thin.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem2023

A scrappier, more visually inventive spin on the mismatched outsiders versus cartoon villain formula, with real teenage outcast heart bubbling under the graffiti splashed chaos and constant jokes.

But Its scratchy, graffiti-inspired animation style is a big departure if you want the smooth photoreal look Sonic trades in.

Dwayne Johnson leads a mismatched crew through a CGI-heavy jungle adventure built on game logic and absurd set pieces, with the same breathless globe-trotting momentum.

But It's aimed at a slightly older audience and leans harder into action-movie tropes than pure family comedy.

Carrey's live-wire physical comedy in Robotnik is a direct descendant of this performance — same manic engine, wildly different rating and audience.

This is where Jim Carrey's rubber-faced, motor-mouthed chaos energy comes from — the exact instrument he's still playing as Robotnik, just unleashed thirty years earlier with zero restraint.

But It's a crude, very-90s comedy with jokes that haven't all aged well, and no family-friendly guardrails whatsoever.

Kubo and the Two Strings2016

Same skeleton — outsider hero, ragtag sidekicks, race for a powerful artifact — but stripped of jokes and CGI gloss, revealing how much emotional weight the structure can actually carry.

A stop-motion fantasy about an unlikely hero and his loyal companions racing to find a magical object before ancient evil claims it — the same quest shape, told with handmade patience and real melancholy.

But It's slower, sadder, and far more visually delicate — there's no slapstick chase energy, and younger kids may find its themes heavier than expected.
