Search Party
Other titles called Search Party: the 2016 series (HBO Max).
A scrappy buddy comedy about two bumbling best friends who venture into Mexico to rescue their friend from a cartel situation. It's a low-budget ramble that leans on improv and character chemistry, with more heart than calculation. If you like hanging out with funny people in over their heads, this is your film.

The Nice Guys2016
Two mismatched investigators bumble through a 1970s LA mystery with genuine affection for each other. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe's chemistry is electric, and the laughs come from character before setup.
But The plot gets convoluted in the final third, and it sometimes mistakes meandering for mystery.

Tropic Thunder2008
A war film parody where actors playing soldiers get stranded in real jungle danger. It's anarchic, dense with jokes at every level, and genuinely thrilling underneath the comedy.
But The satire can feel broad, and some of the shock humour hasn't aged perfectly. It's longest around 107 minutes.

Pineapple Express2008
Stoner action-comedy about two guys fleeing drug dealers through the woods. Seth Rogen and James Franco work beautifully together, and it finds real stakes underneath the goofiness.
But If you don't vibe with weed humour or dumb-guy chemistry, nothing here will convert you.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Detour1945
Both films are about regular guys gradually realizing that ordinary decisions have cascading consequences they can't control or escape. The tone shifts from comedy to genuine jeopardy.
A film noir about ordinary people trapped in increasingly bad circumstances through bad luck and poor decisions. It's a masterclass in escalation and the slow realization that you're in over your head.
But It's a 1940s B-movie: shadows dominate the image, dialogue is ornate, and the moral universe is bleak. Modern patience required.

21 Jump Street2012
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as mismatched cops going undercover at a high school. It's stupid and funny with genuine affection between its leads, and the action sequences are actually inventive.
But The humour is mostly broad, and the sequel double-downs on the formula rather than reinventing it.

Four Rooms1995
Tim Roth as a bellhop trapped with increasingly unhinged guests on New Year's Eve. It's a bottle episode energy, improvisational and weird, full of character actors playing grotesques.
But It's fractured and indulgent—there's a reason it tanked at the box office. Some sketches badly overstay their welcome.

Club Dread2004
Broken Lizard's slasher comedy set at a tropical resort. It has the same ensemble energy and willingness to be stupid that Search Party embraces, with genuinely creepy moments.
But The horror elements undercut the comedy rather than enhancing it, and the mystery is forgettable.

I Love You, Man2009
Paul Rudd and Jason Segel as two guys bonding over potential romance complications. Warm-hearted male friendship comedy that doesn't need adversity to justify the hangout time.
But The romance subplot is predictable, and the film sometimes mistakes sweetness for comedy.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping2016
The Lonely Island's mockumentary about a pop star's rise and fall. Dense with cameos and musical jokes, it's a genuine love letter to parody from people who understand the form.
But If pop music means nothing to you, the satire will feel like a private conversation. Some jokes disappear instantly.

Observe and Report2009
Seth Rogen as a delusional mall cop trying to solve a flasher's crimes. It's character-driven comedy about incompetence and delusion, with unexpected pathos underneath the strangeness.
But It's darker and more uncomfortable than most comedies—the humour is often at characters' expense in ways that don't feel good.

Veep2012
Both use incompetence as the engine—people trying hard to solve problems they're fundamentally unsuited for, creating chaos through proximity rather than malice.
A workplace ensemble comedy where smart, awful people with no experience are in over their heads and made worse by ambition. The chaos escalates with real momentum and dark humor that gets darker.
But It requires stamina across seven seasons to pay off. The comedy is vicious toward every character, including ones you grow fond of.

La Bamba1987
Search Party uses Mexico as a backdrop for American comedy; La Bamba treats Mexican-American culture as the subject itself rather than the setting. Both films hinge on young men pushed into unfamiliar worlds discovering who they actually are.
A coming-of-age drama about a Chicano mechanic who becomes a rock star, set against his relationship with his brothers and the competing pressures of family and fame. It's earnest, colorful, and surprisingly moving.
But It's a straight biographical drama, not a comedy—and it's from the 1980s, so the energy and production values reflect that era.
