Petta

Rajinikanth plays a hostel warden harbouring a violent past, dragged into conflict with a politician and his gangster son. Director Karthik Subbaraj channels 70s action cinema through a modern lens: propulsive, stylish, and unapologetically fun. This is a film that knows exactly what it is and executes with swagger. For anyone who loves a star vehicle that respects the audience's intelligence without taking itself too seriously.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love old-school star vehicles where the hero's swagger is the point, and you enjoy a grinning showman trading menace with a rival who thinks he holds the cards.

Skip it if you find a near three-hour runtime daunting, or you want real tension, since the hero is so dominant that peril rarely feels genuine and the excess can wear thin.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a long haul: nearly three hours, a slow build through ordinary scenes, then a steady escalation of loud, showy confrontations that rarely let the volume drop.

Thugs of Hindostan2018

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan in a glossy historical adventure that shares Petta's commitment to spectacle and star power. Propulsive direction and a willingness to be entertaining above all else.

But The plot can feel secondary to the set pieces, and some sequences run long. A few too many pauses for heroic posing.

Kabali2016

Another Rajinikanth vehicle directed with visual flair, exploring an aging gangster's legacy. Similar star-studded energy and commitment to style over realism. A meditation on power and mortality wrapped in cool.

But Deliberately paced and introspective in places. If you want unbroken action momentum, you'll hit dead air.

Jawan2023

Shah Rukh Khan in a high-octane revenge thriller with excellent ensemble work and Atlee's signature visual bombast. The same pleasure in watching skilled actors inhabit larger-than-life roles with conviction.

But Three-hour runtime can feel indulgent. Plot mechanics occasionally creak under the weight of spectacle.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Killer Elite2011

Both feature aging warriors called back into violence by younger men's ambitions, but Killer Elite treats it as tragedy. Petta treats it as a rite of passage.

Jason Statham in a lean, efficient action thriller with an elderly mentor figure (Robert De Niro) pulling strings. 1970s action cinema DNA filtered through modern technique. No-nonsense execution and moral corruption at the heart.

But Anglo-American sensibility means it plays smaller and colder. The star power is less godlike. Some sequences feel dated now.

Vikram2022

Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi (Petta's scene-stealer) in Lokesh Kanagaraj's kinetic cop thriller. Lean, propulsive, and committed to smart action design. The anti-Petta in some ways, but cut from the same cloth.

But Darker in tone and more plot-heavy. The glamour is secondary to efficiency. Less romance with violence, more cold mathematics.

Singham2011

Ajay Devgn as an righteous cop in Rohit Shetty's high-energy action template. The DNA of mainstream Hindi action cinema: stars, spectacle, moral clarity, and unironic heroism. Petta is its Tamil cousin.

But Relies on some dated ideas about masculinity and justice. The humour can feel broad and occasionally offensive by modern standards.

Master2021

Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi face off in Lokesh Kanagaraj's assured thriller. Sethupathi proves he's an action star in his own right, and the film has Petta's playfulness about genre conventions without losing edge.

But Another sprawling Tamil action film with similar DNA. If you're already hip to this style, it won't surprise you.

Dhoom 32013

Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan in a globe-trotting heist thriller with flawless technical execution. Bollywood at its most polished and entertaining, all style and momentum. Similar confidence in its own appeal.

But Style completely overwhelms substance. The plot is thin, and some sequences exist purely for spectacle. Exhausting if you want emotional weight.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl2020

A different tone entirely, but Janhvi Kapoor in a true-story-inspired action film about competence and determination. Proves the mainstream Hindi-language action formula can accommodate character complexity and real stakes.

But The action is far more grounded and less fantastical. If you came for stunts and chaos, you'll find restraint instead.

Sour Grapes2016

Both are ultimately about the performance of identity: Petta through the lens of the action hero archetype, Sour Grapes through a man who became a character to escape his own life.

A documentary about art fraud, rivalry, and how easily charm and confidence can substitute for truth. Completely different medium and register, but the same fascination with performative masculinity and the stories men tell about themselves. Addictive.

But Nonfiction. No action, no drama—just talking heads and betrayal. If you want plot, you'll be waiting the whole time.
