Manithan
A struggling lawyer sees opportunity in a high-profile hit-and-run case, filing a PIL to drum up publicity for his struggling practice. It's a Tamil comedy-drama that uses courtroom proceedings and social commentary to explore how ambition, justice, and personal gain collide—sharpest when it's questioning who really benefits from the system.

Jai Bhim2021
A Tamil legal drama with real teeth: a lawyer fights for justice for a marginalized family. It has the courtroom intensity and social anger that Manithan gestures toward, but delivered with genuine conviction and emotional weight.
But It's substantially longer and much heavier—this is grief and systemic violence, not comedy. You're not here for laughs, and it doesn't soften its subject.

Pink2016
Released the same year, this Hindi courtroom drama also interrogates how the justice system works for ordinary people. Sharp dialogue, excellent ensemble cast, and a similar interest in how law can be weaponized or redeemed.
But It's a different language and tonally more serious. The social commentary is foregrounded in a way Manithan balances with comedy.

Andhadhun2018
A Hindi thriller where nothing is what it seems and every character is playing angles. Outstanding craft, unpredictable plotting, and a protagonist whose moral compass is genuinely broken.
But It's a genre shift away from legal drama into crime thriller—far more cynical, and asks you to enjoy characters behaving monstrously.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari2020
Both use comedy to explore how systems shape human behaviour, but Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is interested in the system itself (matrimony, caste, class) as something absurd and human, rather than corrupt.
A Hindi comedy about a man who investigates brides before arranged marriages—absurd premise, but it's genuinely funny and surprisingly sweet. Same comedic DNA as Manithan (ordinary guy, social skewering, romance subplot) but in a totally different register: light, warm, deeply silly.
But If you came for courtroom drama or social anger, this is frothy dessert instead. It's comfort food, and some people don't want comfort.

Asuran2019
Another Tamil film about systems failing people, but from the perspective of a man pushed to violence. Prakash Raj gives a devastating performance; it's righteous anger made flesh.
But It's brutal and tragic. No comedy, no courtroom procedural—this is about what happens when the system breaks people entirely.

Mulk2018
A Hindi legal drama about a Muslim family defending their honour in court after being accused of terrorism. Serious inquiry into justice, prejudice, and what the law actually protects.
But Deliberately paced and politically charged in ways that won't let you rest. Doesn't offer easy answers or catharsis.

Jolly LLB2013
A Hindi comedy-drama where a small-town lawyer takes on an impossible case. Arshad Warsi is winning, the courtroom stuff is clever, and it genuinely cares about its underdog.
But It's broader comedy and less interested in real critique. Easier to watch, which also means less that lingers afterward.

Article 152019
A Hindi crime drama about a cop investigating caste violence. Angry, urgent, and interested in how power corrupts institutions. Ayushmann Khurrana against type in a genuinely serious role.
But Graphic depictions of violence and sexual assault. Not a film you watch for pleasure; it's an ordeal in service of something true.
