Film
Khatta Meetha
Other titles called Khatta Meetha: the 1978 film.
Akshay Kumar plays a hapless contractor tangling with corrupt officials, his own ego, and a fractured love story in this Hindi comedy-drama. It's energetic and uneven, swinging between slapstick and sentiment. For fans of Kumar's physical comedy who can tolerate a scattershot plot and don't mind a film that tries to do too much.

Dil Dhadakne Do2015
A family ensemble that balances comedy and emotional weight across multiple storylines without losing coherence. Smart, affectionate, and genuinely funny, with excellent chemistry between leads.
But It's longer than it needs to be, and some subplots dissolve without real payoff. The tone can feel uneven between the lighter and heavier moments.

Rang De Basanti2006
A young man navigates bureaucratic corruption and finds purpose beyond himself. It has Kumar's energy, genuine stakes, and the same blend of comedy and idealism that makes messy passion feel earned.
But The tonal shifts between college comedy and serious drama are jarring. The second half asks you to invest in a shift that doesn't always land.

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!2008
A scrappy thief's rise and fall, told with warmth and humour. It captures that same energy of a flawed protagonist bouncing off a corrupt system with schemes that half-work.
But The narrative meanders. Plot threads drop away, and the film sometimes feels more interested in moments than in a coherent story.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Jai Bhim2021
Both pit an ordinary man against corruption and bureaucratic indifference, but Jai Bhim asks: what if you didn't get to be funny about it?
A lawyer fights a rigged system for the powerless. Same engine as Khatta Meetha—a flawed man pushed to integrity by circumstance—but stripped of comedy and told with absolute seriousness. Devastating and necessary.
But It's unrelenting in its anger and bleakness. There is no cathartic joke or soft landing. This is a film that demands something from you.

Hera Pheri2000
Three broke men scheme against small-time criminals. It's pure ensemble comedy with the kind of anarchic energy that forgives plot holes—warm, silly, and endlessly rewatchable.
But The humour is very broad and very 2000s. If you don't click with slapstick and the ensemble's rhythms, it can feel exhausting.

Singh Is Kinng2008
Akshay Kumar as a Punjabi in Australia facing criminals and his own obliviousness. It's lighter and less conflicted than Khatta Meetha, but built on the same pleasure of watching him charge through obstacles.
But It's thin and happy to stay that way. If you want depth or a real emotional arc, this isn't it.

Golmaal – Fun Unlimited2006
Four friends bungle through a case of mistaken identity. Ensemble comedy that leans on character and timing rather than plot, with real affection between the cast.
But The story is negligible, and the humour is locked firmly in its era. Some of it creaks now.

Chandni Chowk to China2009
Akshay Kumar as a noodle seller mistaken for a martial arts hero. It's unambiguously silly and committed to that silliness in a way that's actually refreshing.
But The plot is tissue-thin and the logic doesn't hold for a second. If you need narrative coherence, stay away.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na2008
A romantic comedy about two people who don't realise they're perfect for each other. It's light, charming, and has that same willingness to be earnest underneath the chaos.
But It's very sweet and not very substantial. If you want anything darker or more complex, this isn't the film for it.

Rang Rasiya2014
Both explore how a man's refusal to compromise costs him everything that matters, but one is a loud comedy and the other is a whisper.
A period film about a 19th-century painter and his wife. Completely different register—intimate, sensual, visual—but built on the same scaffolding: a man's ambition and ego against love and family obligation.
But It's slow and very interior. If you watch Khatta Meetha for the noise and slapstick, this will feel like watching paint dry. Literally.

Article 152019
Both are Hindi-language films about systems of power and the cost of trying to navigate or fight them, but Article 15 refuses the comedy as a shield.
A police officer investigates a caste-based crime in rural India. It uses the same dark-comedy-into-seriousness blend as Khatta Meetha, but commits fully to the darkness. Urgent and unforgettable.
But It's angry and uncompromising about violence and injustice. If you're watching for escapism, this is the opposite of that.
