Deewana
Deewana is a 1992 Hindi film that launched Shah Rukh Khan as a major star. It's a messy, generous movie—part romance, part crime thriller, part comedy—that never settles into one lane but rarely stops moving. Built on big emotions, bigger music, and the kind of melodrama that assumes the audience wants to feel everything at once. Perfect if you like Bollywood swept up in its own chaos.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
The spiritual successor to Deewana's earnest romanticism, but refined. SRK and Kajol anchor a film that understands longing and sacrifice without needing to detour into murder plots. Iconic and genuinely moving.
But By 1995 standards it's already polished and conventional. If you want the raw energy of early SRK, this feels slightly too assured.

Baazigar1993
SRK as a dark, driven man with a secret agenda. It has Deewana's thriller DNA but sharper—the twists actually land, and the moral complexity holds up. Proof he could do menace as well as longing.
But Darker and colder than Deewana. Less of the swooning romance, more of the noir mechanics. Some find it dated now.

Chandni1989
The template Bollywood used for romantic melodrama in the late '80s and early '90s. Sridevi opposite Rishi Kapoor (who plays your lead here). Achingly romantic, gorgeously shot, the kind of film that justifies why people love Hindi cinema.
But It's slow by modern standards and the plot is tissue-thin. The beauty of it is in the feeling, not the doing—that doesn't work for everyone.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Gambit1966
Both are about a man and a woman who don't quite trust each other, with schemes and murder as the backdrop. Deewana made it huge and tragic; Gambit made it a lark. Same structure, opposite temperature.
Michael Caine in a con-artist romance across Europe. It's lightweight and fun, entirely American, but it shares Deewana's structure: a love story where money and deception are the real plot. Urbane where Deewana is operatic.
But It's from 1966 and looks it. The humor is genteel rather than emotional. It has none of Deewana's melodramatic intensity—it actively avoids it.

Darr1993
SRK in his obsessive fan era, but with the volume turned up to eleven. It's psychologically twisted and surprisingly dark for mainstream Hindi cinema. Kajol is brilliant, and it has genuine menace beneath the melodrama.
But The obsession plotline can feel uncomfortably real, and it's relentless in ways that feel grim rather than entertaining. Genuinely unsettling.

Lamhe1991
Yash Chopra at his most ambitious and unhinged. A love story that spans decades, shot in Europe, with Anil Kapoor and Sri Devi creating something operatic. If you love Deewana's emotional excess, this pushes it further.
But It's a film that tried to do too much and partially failed. Some sequences feel indulgent, and the pacing is genuinely weird. Beautifully shot, but sometimes incoherent.

Rang1993
A con-artist romance with genuine charm and Aamir Khan at his most likeable. It's lighter than Deewana—a heist wrapped in courtship—and the chemistry between leads actually sparks. Fun and inventive.
But It's a formula film executed well but not transcendently. If you're looking for emotional depth or surprise, this is professional work, not revelation.

Khal Nayak1993
Sanjay Dutt as a criminal, Madhuri Dixit as the cop pursuing him. It has Deewana's crime-melodrama mix but with better action sequences. The chemistry between leads is electric, and the '90s excess is exactly as advertised.
But The gender politics are dated and sometimes uncomfortable. It's also wildly long and occasionally loses focus. The spectacle can feel empty if you don't buy the central romance.

Maine Pyar Kiya1989
Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in the romantic template that defined the era. It's earnest, sweet, and has the kind of sincerity Deewana also reaches for—but with more restraint and actual plot momentum.
But It's almost aggressively soft. No edge, no darkness, no complication. If you want some friction, you won't find it here.

Yoddha1992
A lesser-known action film from the same era, with real stunt work and commitment to its premise. Worth seeing as a companion to understand what mainstream Hindi cinema was trying in 1992 beyond the SRK vehicle.
But It's minor even by its own era's standards. Uneven pacing, thin characterization, and it doesn't quite justify its own runtime. A genuine curiosity rather than a classic.

Rufus2012
Both explore what happens when obsession and money intersect, but Hunted is the dark version Deewana flirts with but never quite commits to. It's what happens when you remove the music and the love and keep only the menace.
A small, devastating South African thriller where an obsessed stranger attaches himself to a family. It has Deewana's DNA of obsession and danger, but stripped of romance or music—just raw, psychological threat. Genuinely disturbing and brilliant.
But It's slow-burn and quiet where Deewana is melodramatic and loud. It's also grim in a way that doesn't entertain—it unnerves. Not for anyone seeking fun or catharsis.
