Batman & Bill

A 93-minute documentary that tells the true story of Batman's creation, exposing how Bill Finger's massive contributions were erased from history while Bob Kane took sole credit. It's a compelling detective story about creative theft, the power of persistence, and how one man fought to restore a co-creator's legacy. Essential viewing for comic fans and anyone interested in how stories actually get made.

Copyright Criminals2009

A documentary about hip-hop sampling that explores the same legal and moral questions: who owns creativity, and how do we credit debt? Different medium, identical dilemma.

But Focused on music, not comics. You're trading specificity for philosophical breadth.

Ingrid Goes West2017

The same year as Batman & Bill, this film obsesses over authorship, influence, and who deserves recognition for an idea. Not a documentary, but philosophically aligned.

But It's a psychological thriller and dark comedy, not a straightforward investigation. Very different tone and format.

F for Fake1973

Both are about truth-telling in the face of established lies, about credit and erasure, but Welles attacks it with surrealist energy instead of journalistic investigation.

Orson Welles' essay-documentary about authorship, forgery, and who decides what's real. Dazzling, strange, and playfully angry about the same core question: who made this, and does anyone care?

But Notoriously difficult, deliberately disorienting, and 50 years old. It's not a straightforward film and it won't let you be passive.

The Tale2018

Both are detective stories about restoration of truth—one recovering a person's professional legacy, the other a person's memory of harm. Both argue that naming and acknowledgment are not small things.

Jennifer Fox's autobiographical documentary reconstructs her own hidden history, uncovering what she didn't know about herself. Like Batman & Bill, it's about excavating buried truth and asking why it matters that we know who did what.

But Deals with childhood trauma and sexual abuse. Far more personal and painful than a superhero story, and some viewers will find it too raw.
