Action Jackson

Other titles called Action Jackson: the 2014 film.

Action Jackson is an 1988 action-comedy that treats Carl Weathers as an unstoppable force of nature. It's gleefully absurd—part police procedural, part revenge fantasy, entirely committed to the bit. Watch it if you love action films that don't take themselves seriously, or if you want to see an athlete become a star on his own charismatic terms.

Lethal Weapon1987

Proof that action and comedy belong together when you have the right chemistry. Glover and Gibson's banter elevated the whole genre, showing you don't need a quip every line to be funny while staying thrilling.

But By now the buddy-cop formula feels archetypal. If you've seen dozens of films ape this structure, the original might feel overly familiar.

48 Hrs.1982

Eddie Murphy's film debut as a fast-talking convict paired with a straight-man cop. Pure charisma and comedy energy that proved a wisecracking lead could carry an action film without undercutting tension.

But The racial dynamics and some language choices feel of their era in ways that may pull you out. It's a product of 1982 in both good and uncomfortable ways.

Beverly Hills Cop1984

Eddie Murphy again, but as the outsider cop navigating wealth and snobbery. The fish-out-of-water premise stays funny across multiple watches, and the action actually matters alongside the comedy.

But The sequels wore out this formula badly, so the original can feel like a template you've already seen executed a dozen times over.

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Hidden1987

Both pit a charismatic cop protagonist against an elite antagonist, but The Hidden wraps that dynamic in speculative fiction—taking the buddy-cop action formula somewhere unexpected.

A cop and an FBI agent hunt an alien parasite through Los Angeles. It's a sci-fi action film made on a budget, but it's smart, genuinely scary in moments, and proves you don't need millions to make something surprising. Kyle MacLachlan before Twin Peaks.

But The body-horror elements are unsettling in ways that action films usually aren't. If you want your action films to stay fun and breezy, this one carries real dread.

Commando1985

Schwarzenegger on a rescue mission with gloriously dumb one-liners and an action set piece every three minutes. Pure genre comfort food that knows exactly what it is and commits fully.

But The plot is tissue-thin and the female characters barely register. It's a cartoon, and not everyone wants their action as pure cartoon.

Raw Deal1986

Schwarzenegger undercover in the Chicago mob, Dolph Lundgren as a blonde-tipped villain. Gloriously earnest pulp that takes its ridiculous premise seriously, which makes it funnier.

But It's paced like sludge in the middle. The action kicks in and out unevenly, and dialogue scenes drag on when they should snap.

Raw Deal poster

Cobra1986

Stallone as a cop so cool he barely speaks, taking down a serial killer cult with an attitude and a car. It's style over substance, but the style is immaculate and the violence is genuinely striking.

But The misogyny is baked in—women are victims or props, and the whole thing has a creepy undercurrent that hasn't aged well despite the stylish veneer.

Red Sonja1985

Schwarzenegger in a sword-and-sorcery fantasy where he's not the lead, playing sidekick to a red-haired warrior queen. Bizarre, campy, and wildly entertaining in its commitment to the bit.

But The plot is nearly incomprehensible and the pacing stumbles often. It's fun *because* it's messy, which means it's an acquired taste.

Sudden Death1995

Jean-Claude Van Damme as a firefighter at a hockey game where terrorists strike. It's Die Hard stripped to its purest formula, executed with B-movie earnestness and some genuinely clever action sequences.

But Van Damme's accent and delivery can grate. The film around the action beats sags, and you're mostly waiting for the next fight scene.

Sudden Death poster

Stone Cold1991

An undercover cop infiltrates a biker gang; Lance Henriksen is the villain. It's straightforward action pulp made by people who understood the assignment and executed it competently.

But It's utterly forgettable by design. There's nothing here that sticks with you, which means you might wonder afterward why you spent the evening on it.

Johnny Dangerously1984

Both treat action and crime narratives as vehicles for comedy rather than drama. Action Jackson plays it slightly straighter, but both are fundamentally asking: what if we took the ridiculous parts seriously?

A gangster comedy where Michael Keaton plays the lead and Joe Piscopo steals it as his foil. It's Prohibition-era crime played entirely for laughs, with rapid-fire jokes that reward repeat viewings.

But It's a comedy first, which means the action is deliberately farcical and cartoonish. If you want your action to have stakes, this isn't it.

Conan the Barbarian1982

Both center on a single-minded protagonist pursuing a vendetta against a powerful antagonist operating from a position of wealth and influence. Where Action Jackson is irreverent, Conan is grave—same engine, opposite registers.

Schwarzenegger in John Milius's sword-and-sorcery epic, where a man avenges his murdered family against a cult leader. It's how you make a barbarian film feel operatic and genuinely mythic, with action sequences that build in intensity.

But It's slow, meditative, and deeply unglamorous. The violence is brutal rather than thrilling. If you want quips and pace, this will test your patience.
