Dr. John Zoidberg is Planet Express's staff physician, a lobster-like alien whose medical knowledge is dubious at best. He's broke, homeless in practice if not on paper, and desperate for friendship and a decent meal. He hovers around the crew hoping to be included, undeterred by their constant recoiling.

Billy West gives him a burbling, mucusy voice that's somehow endearing rather than repulsive, and the writing commits fully to his indignity — bad breath jokes, medical malpractice, eating garbage — without ever losing the pathos underneath. He's the show's saddest joke and its softest heart, often in the same scene.
