Zoe Alleyne Washburne

Zoe is second-in-command aboard Serenity, a war veteran who fought alongside Captain Mal Reynolds on the losing side of a civil war and has followed him into smuggling ever since. Newly married to the ship's pilot Wash, she is unshakably loyal, dry-witted, and calm under fire in ways that make everyone around her look jumpy by comparison.

Gina Torres plays competence as its own kind of charisma — Zoe never raises her voice because she never needs to. The writing trusts her to be the adult in nearly every room, letting her marriage to the goofy Wash reveal warmth underneath the soldier's discipline, and Torres makes that contrast feel entirely lived-in rather than written.
