Yusef Salaam

Played by Chris Chalk in the series' later chapters, Yusef Salaam appears as the man Yusef has become after years of incarceration for a crime he did not commit — guarded, deliberate, still working out how to speak, move, and trust in a world that convicted him before he was old enough to vote.

Chalk plays the after, not the injustice itself, and that restraint is the performance's power — a stillness that reads as vigilance rather than calm. He shows a man reassembling selfhood in real time, careful with every word, and lets the audience feel exactly how much has been taken without ever asking for pity.
