Young Princess Elizabeth

Before the crown ever touches her head, Elizabeth is a watchful, dutiful girl, close to her sister and father, only dimly aware of the abdication crisis reshaping her family. She is proper, curious, and quietly earnest — a child being shaped, without quite knowing it, into a future monarch she never expected to become.

The Crown's opening scenes gain their weight from watching a child absorb the idea of destiny secondhand, through adult conversations she's not meant to fully understand. Prettejohn plays her with a stillness that suggests intelligence rather than passivity, letting the audience feel the enormous, invisible shift in her life before she can.
