Young Nell

Nell is the youngest of the five Crain children, a small, dreamy girl with a twin brother, Luke, and a habit of noticing things in Hill House that the adults dismiss as imagination. She talks to a figure she calls the Bent-Neck Lady, wanders the halls at night, and clings to her mother with a child's plain, unguarded need.

Violet McGraw plays unease without cliché—her fear reads as a child's genuine confusion rather than horror-movie shorthand, which makes the house's wrongness feel domestic and real. Because the show later hinges entirely on who Nell becomes, the tenderness and vulnerability McGraw builds into her early scenes matter enormously, and she earns every bit of it.
