Young Bill

Seen only in flashback, Young Bill is Elena Richardson's college sweetheart, an earnest, clean-cut young man still years from the settled Shaker Heights lawyer he'll become. He's hopeful, a little nervous around Elena, eager to prove himself worthy of her plans for a conventional, well-ordered life.

The character works as a quiet contrast machine: watching him fumble toward the future lets the show measure how far — or how little — the adult Richardsons have traveled from who they meant to be. Matthew Barnes plays him without irony, all boyish sincerity, which makes the later marriage read as compromise rather than fate.
