Young Beth

Glimpsed in flashback, Young Beth is a sharp, ambitious teenager growing up in the shadow of her brilliant, absent father. She dreams of becoming a surgeon, chafes against small-town limits, and carries herself with the same prickly confidence and barely-hidden hurt that will define her as an adult.

Sarah Chalke voices both versions of Beth, so the flashbacks land as continuity rather than gimmick — you hear the adult's defensiveness already forming in the teenager's voice. The show uses her sparingly, letting small scenes of ambition and disappointment explain, without lecturing, exactly why Beth turned out the way she did.
