Yoshii Toranaga

At the story's opening, Toranaga is the least trusted man on the Council of Regents, boxed in by rivals who suspect he wants to seize power for himself. He seems outmatched, agreeable even, deflecting accusations with calm patience while war closes in around him. Every gesture looks smaller than it is.

Sanada plays a man who wins by never looking like he's trying to. The performance is almost entirely internal — a flicker of calculation behind courtesy, stillness where another actor would reach for menace. You watch him lose every room and somehow leave holding it, which is the whole pleasure of him.
