Yennefer of Vengerberg

Yennefer of Vengerberg in The Witcher (2019), played by Anya Chalotra.

Yennefer begins as a hunchbacked, ridiculed girl from Vengerberg before she is remade into one of the most powerful sorceresses at Aretuza. Ambitious and furious at the world that discarded her, she wants power, beauty, and control over her own fate, and she is willing to pay terrible prices to get them.

Chalotra plays transformation as wound rather than triumph, so every gain reads as something taken as well as given. The show lets her be vain, cruel, and self-destructive without asking forgiveness for it, and that refusal to soften her is exactly what makes her magnetic and, eventually, sympathetic.

Yennefer of Vengerberg, born as Janka on Belleteyn in 1173, was a sorceress who lived in Vengerberg, the capital city of Aedirn. She was Geralt of Rivia's one true love and a mother figure to Ciri, whom she viewed like a daughter to the point that she did everything she could to rescue the girl and keep her from harm.
