Xiomara Villanueva

Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva is Jane's mother — younger than most, sharper-tongued than her own mother would like, and still chasing a singing career while working as a receptionist. She raised Jane essentially alone, and the two are more like best friends than parent and child, close enough to share almost everything.

Andrea Navedo plays Xo with a warmth that never curdles into sitcom-mom sweetness; she's messy, funny, sexually confident, and unapologetic about wanting a life beyond motherhood. The show uses her to complicate the abstinence-and-destiny fairy tale around Jane, giving the family's three generations of women genuinely different values instead of one moral lesson.
