Character

Worms

Worms in Futurama (1999), played by David Herman.

Worms is exactly what the name promises: a minor, likely single-episode presence in Futurama's sprawling gallery of oddities, voiced by David Herman with the same deadpan commitment he brings to the show's stranger corners. Little is shown of motive or backstory beyond the joke of the moment.

Futurama's genius is treating throwaway ideas with total sincerity, and a character called Worms is a perfect vehicle for that: David Herman commits fully to the bit, finding a voice and rhythm for something absurd without winking at the audience, which is exactly why the show's smallest jokes land.

Worms are a mutualistic species of sapient worms acquired via ingestion (eating food infected with them). Once inside of a host, they begin to improve all of the infected organism's bodily and mental abilities, most likely for the same reason that any sapient race would advance technology, to enhance lifestyle.
