Woody Boyd steps behind the Cheers bar as the fresh-faced Indiana boy replacing Coach, all corn-fed sincerity and small-town manners in a room full of Boston wit. He takes everything at face value, answers questions nobody meant literally, and seems genuinely delighted to be pouring drinks for this crowd of regulars.

The joke could have been cheap rube-in-the-city stuff, but Harrelson plays Woody's naivety without a trace of stupidity behind the eyes — he's guileless, not dumb, and that distinction makes every double-take and mangled turn of phrase land as sweet rather than mean. He's the bar's moral weather, always fair.
