William I, commonly known as William the Conqueror, was the first Norman king of England, who reigned from 1066 until his death in 1087. Before he was known as William the Conqueror, he was William Duke of Normandy. He was crowned king of England on Christmas 1066. He is well known for defeating Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings and ordering the surveys for the Domesday Book.
