Will Reeves arrives in Tulsa an old man in a wheelchair, found hanging from a tree and calmly unbothered by it. He tells Angela Abar he is her grandfather, a claim she has no reason to believe, and speaks in riddles about the past that she cannot yet place. His stillness reads as either senility or design.

Louis Gossett Jr. plays him with a courtly, unhurried menace, a man who has clearly waited a very long time to say certain things and intends to say them on his own schedule. The show trusts him to be the still center of chaos he causes, and Gossett makes patience itself feel dangerous.
