Whitney Ellsworth

Bearded, filthy, and utterly unbothered by his own scruffiness, Ellsworth is a gold prospector scraping a living on Deadwood's claims. He's plainspoken and self-mocking, quick with a dry joke about his own wretched appearance, and he ends up minding Alma Garret's mining interests with a diligence nobody, least of all him, expected.

Jim Beaver plays him as the camp's rare unguarded soul—no angle, no performance of toughness, just a working man's honesty in a town built on grift. The writing uses his shagginess as camouflage for real decency, and Beaver's weathered, unhurried delivery makes every plain sentence land like wisdom nobody asked for but everybody needed.
