Walter White

Walter White is a soft-spoken high school chemistry teacher in Albuquerque, underpaid and overqualified, moonlighting at a car wash to make ends meet. A cancer diagnosis and the fear of leaving his family with nothing pushes him toward cooking methamphetamine with a former student, a decision he frames as reluctant and temporary.

Cranston plays the meekness so completely — the apologetic posture, the strangled voice — that the show can spend years revealing what was underneath it, and every shift registers as a shock even though it was always there. The writing never lets him off the hook for his own justifications, which is what makes him so uncomfortably watchable.
