Vernon Gaines

Vernon Gaines runs the campus diner known as the Pit, dishing out burgers and grits to Hillman's students along with a steady stream of gruff commentary. He has little patience for nonsense and even less for being thanked, but he watches over the young people who pass through his counter more closely than he lets on.

Lou Myers plays him with a scowl that never quite hides the affection underneath, turning a stock sitcom figure — the crusty adult among college kids — into someone whose disapproval carries real weight. His deadpan timing and refusal to coddle anyone make his rare moments of tenderness land like earned truth rather than sentiment.
