Verin Mathwin

Verin Mathwin is an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah, drawn to Moiraine's party out of scholarly fascination with the Two Rivers travelers. She seems scattered and absent-minded, forever taking notes and asking odd, prying questions, but she watches everyone closely, and nothing she says feels quite as idle as it sounds.

Meera Syal plays her with a twinkling, distracted warmth that invites you to underestimate her, which is precisely the point. The writing hides real shrewdness beneath academic clutter and gentle humor, so every scene she's in carries a faint undertow of something unsaid. You start watching her instead of just listening.
