Valeria Velez

Valeria Velez in Narcos (2015), played by Stephanie Sigman.

Valeria Velez is a television journalist in a Mexico where reporting the truth about narco-trafficking can get you killed. She's ambitious and camera-ready, angling for bigger stories and a national platform, but she's also genuinely curious about what's happening in Sinaloa — willing to ask the questions her more cautious colleagues won't.

Sigman plays her with a poise that could easily read as vanity but instead becomes a kind of armor — you sense the calculation behind every polished appearance. The show uses her to ask what journalism actually costs in a narco-state, and Sigman keeps her sympathetic without ever making her naive about the danger she's courting.

Valeria Velez was a Colombian journalist who had a romantic relationship with Medellín cartel boss Pablo Escobar from 1981 to 1991. She was murdered by Los Pepes for being "Pablo's whore" in 1993.
