Umma Kim

Umma runs the family alongside the store, a devout, no-nonsense Korean mother who prays hard, matchmakes harder, and keeps a running commentary on everyone's choices. She wants her children settled, married well, and closer to church and family than they'd prefer. Warmth and bluntness arrive in the same breath.

Jean Yoon plays Umma's meddling with such conviction that it never curdles into caricature — you always sense the love underneath the scheming. The writing gives her sharp comic timing and real interiority, letting her be funny, devout, and quietly wounded within the same scene, which is harder than it looks.
