Translator Machine

Wheeled into scenes to render alien or foreign speech into English, the Translator Machine is less a neutral device than a small, opinionated presence. It renders dialogue dutifully enough, but keeps slipping in its own asides and exclamations, turning a background gadget into a running joke about how badly translation, and objectivity, can go.

It's a one-joke premise executed with total commitment: a machine that can't resist editorializing while doing its job. DiMaggio gives it a gruff, put-upon delivery that makes each unnecessary interjection funnier than the last, and the show never overexplains it, trusting the gag to land purely on rhythm and surprise.
