Tom Branson

Tom Branson is the Crawley family's chauffeur, an Irish socialist with strong opinions about the aristocracy he serves. He reads newspapers other servants ignore, argues politics with anyone who'll listen, and quietly, persistently makes his feelings known to Lady Sybil, the family's most rebellious daughter. He is proud, principled, and entirely unwilling to know his place.

Branson works because Downton needs someone who actually believes the old order should end, not just someone who chafes against it decoratively. Allen Leech plays his conviction without smugness — you can see why Sybil is drawn to him precisely because he never softens his views to be liked. He's the show's conscience in a chauffeur's cap.
