Character

Tobio Kageyama

Tobio Kageyama in Haikyuu!! (2014), played by Kaito Ishikawa.

Kageyama arrives at Karasuno as a prodigy setter with a fearsome reputation and a chip on his shoulder, still stinging from a middle-school collapse he blames on teammates who couldn't keep up with him. He's blunt, intense, and hungry to win, often barking orders before he's learned anyone's name — including his new partner Hinata's.

The show lets his talent and his immaturity coexist without excusing either: he's genuinely brilliant and genuinely difficult, and growth comes through practice and friction rather than a sudden personality fix. Ishikawa plays the gruffness with just enough crack in it that his awkward attempts at teamwork land as funny and touching rather than forced.

He was chosen to train at the All-Japan youth training camp during his first year of high school and joined the V. League as soon as he graduated. He became a part of Japan's national volleyball team at the age of 19, participating in the Rio Olympics in 2016. In November 2018, he was playing as a setter for the Japanese V-League Division 1 team Schweiden Adlers.
